What’s the Difference Between Plain Ball Ends and Single Shank Ball Ends?

Ball ends are a simple style of cable terminal that offers a wide range of versatility. In general, they are used when mating an assembly to a clevis, or when a stopping action is required. The round shape allows the fitting to swivel around other surfaces without pulling through, giving it the functionality of a stop with additional flexibility. As an added bonus, Sanlo offers two different styles of ball ends that each offer their own unique benefits. Here are some of the differences between plan ball ends and single shank ball ends.

Plain ball ends are the simplest style of all ball ends, and they are a commercial version of BACT14B and NAS494 series terminals. Like a metal bead, these fittings feature spherical sides, flat top and bottom, and a channel that runs through the center. Unlike compression sleeves or stops that can be swaged using traditional hand tools, our ball ends rely on a hydroforming process that achieves maximum holding strength while still preserving the spherical shape. When properly installed, these fittings hold at least 60% of the breaking strength of the cable upon which they are installed. Our plain ball ends are available in stainless steel, and suit cable diameters ranging from 1/32” to 3/16”.

Single shank ball ends have a similar appearance and functionality to plain ball ends, except they have a tubular shaft attached to one side. This style of fitting is the commercial version of the MS20664 series single shank ball end, and it has a higher breaking strength than plain ball ends due to the additional surface area created by the shank. When properly swaged using our hydroforming process, it maintains at least 80% of the breaking strength of its cable. Single shank ball ends are a great option for applications that require additional strength compared to plain ball ends, however the shank does add additional bulk to the end of a cable that may not be suitable for tight spaces.
