In our last fittings and tools blog, we looked at three cable fittings and tools used to terminate custom cable assemblies, and today we will be looking at three more fittings. The three fittings we want to focus on are plain ball ends, single shank ball ends, and standard carbon steel thimbles. Continue reading for an overview of these three fittings and tools.
Plain Ball Ends:
Plain ball ends are used to mate an assembly to a clevis or any other fitting that may swivel. The plain ball fittings offered at Sanlo are a commercial version of the traditional BACT14B and NAS494 series. While the expected holding strength for these fittings is 60% of the breaking strength of the cable, Sanlo uses a hydroforming process to achieve the maximum holding strength possible. We recommend looking for plain ball ends that have gone under the hydroforming process as it also leaves the fittings as a perfect sphere.
Single Shank Ball Ends:
Single shank ball ends are similar to plain ball fittings as they allow the cable to rotate when attached to a clevis or strap fork. The shank section of the ball end protects the cable and increases the holding strength of the cable. When applied with our hydroforming process, single shank ball ends will achieve 80% or more cable breaking strength. Sanlo’s single shank ball ends are a commercial version of the traditional MS20664 series.
Standard Carbon Steel Thimbles:
Standard carbon steel thimbles are fittings used to protect the bearing surface where a cable mounts to a mating parting. Thimbles are commonly installed inside of a loop. At Sanlo, we believe high quality is very important for fittings, so we recommend thimbles that can meet specific specifications and requirements. Sanlo’s thimbles are manufactured to meet the dimensional requirements of FF-T-276B, Type II, and we also carry thimbles that meet AN100 specifications.
